You can excuse Detroit Red Wings general manager Ken Holland if he seemed a little out of his element when selecting 9th overall in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. That’s because the Wings are used to selecting first somewhere in to 20-30 range, if in the first round at all.

In any case, when Tyler Wright, director of amateur scouting for the Wings, stepped to the podium to announce his team’s selection of 6’6”, 215 lb centerman Michael Rasmussen at 9th overall, Holland must have been thrilled. Rasmussen was the 5th ranked North American skater in the draft, so to nab him at 9th overall has to be seen as a huge win for the Wings.

Speaking of huge, the Wings didn’t stop with Rasmussen when prioritizing size at the draft podium. The also selected 6’5” goaltender Keith Petruzelli in the 3rd round and 6’5” center Jack Adams (no, not THE Jack Adams) in the 6th round.
