The Pittsburgh Penguins have just confirmed that one of their top stars was dealing with a pretty serious injury in their failed run during the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

On Monday morning the Penguins announced that forward Evgeni Malkin had undergone a surgical procedure to correct damage to his left elbow, damage that no doubt hampered him during the playoffs. Malkin was heavily criticized for his inability to deliver big points in the series against the Montreal Canadiens when his team needed those points the most, however it now appears as though there was a very good reason behind his lackluster performance in that series.

From the Penguins:

The surgery was performed at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital by team physician, Dr. Dharmesh Vyas, and Dr. John Fowler of UPMC Shoulder and Elbow Orthopedic Surgery.

Malkin is now expected to be out for roughly one month, the Penguins have set the timeline for his recovery at 3 to 4 weeks, so the silver lining here for the Penguins is that we would expect Malkin to have fully recovered from the procedure by the time training camp for the 2020 - 2021 National Hockey League regular season
