Hard not to respect this young man.

The Calgary Flames fan base did not get the playoff run that they were hoping for, and while there's no doubt that a fair share of the blame will be heaped onto the shoulders of the members of the Flames roster, star forward Sean Monahan may get a little more sympathy from fans after this revelation.

The young center spoke to the media on Friday after the team's disappointing first round playoff exit, a sweep by the Anaheim Ducks, but his most interesting comments came when he was asked not about the playoffs, but rather the upcoming IIHF World Championship tournament.

Monahan revealed to the press that while there was an offer on the table for him to represent his country, he would be forced to decline as the result of a wrist injury that will require surgery to repair.

“They did ask me and I’d love to go,” said Monahan as per the Calgary Herlad. “I’m going to get some kinks out of (his wrist) and be ready to go for next season.”

This of course indicate that Monahan was playing through the wrist injury during the postseason, and perhaps even prior to that, certainly something that paints the efforts from this young man in the postseason in a very different light.
