The Calgary Flames have signed restricted free agent winger Matthew Tkachuk to a three-year bridge deal, according to the TSN Hockey insider Bob McKenzie.

The new deal will carry a cap hit of $7 million.

Tkachuk had a career year last season, posting 34 goals and 77 points in 80 games with the Flames. He added two goals and one assist in five playoff games.

He had recently been skating with his former club, the London Knights in the Ontario Hockey League. Knights linemate Mitch Marner signed a new extension earlier this month, earning a $10.893-million cap hit over six years, which prompted many insiders to wonder if Tkachuk would request a similar contract. Other young stars, such as Winnipeg Jets forwards Patrik Laine and Kyle Connor, remain unsigned.

This new contract makes Tkachuk  the Flames’ highest-paid player moving forward, just above Johnny Gaudreau ($6.75-million cap hit), captain Mark Giordano ($6.75-million) and Sean Monahan ($6.375-million cap hit).
