It seems that veteran forward Tobias Rieder may have worn out his welcome in Calgary, at least for the time being.

According to a report from The Athletic's James Mirtle, the Calgary Flames have placed Rieder on waivers today, presumably with the intention of sending him down to the American Hockey League should he clear the waiver process. It is unclear at this time what motivated this move but given that Calgary Flames head coach Bill Peters has shuffled around a number of players on his top lines this morning, indicating perhaps that the Flames bench boss believes that his forwards are in need of some additional motivation.

The move comes just after 9 games at the National Hockey League level for Rieder with the Flames, 9 games in which he recorded just a single goal and no assists for a total of 1 point. Over that stretch of 9 games Rieder remained relatively disciplined acquiring no penalty minutes but also boasting a plus minus rating of -4, certainly not what you want to see from a veteran player being used as forward depth in your lineup. The question now of course becomes whether or not there is a team out there that will take a stab at Rieder moving forward.

The 26 year old winger is not exactly a dynamic offensive scorer but he does bring a wealth of NHL experience with him and is earning a very reasonable salary this season. The Flames sign Rieder to a new deal on the 29th of September of this year, one that currently has the German born forward earning the league minimum of $700,000. Rieder also has tiesto several NHL organizations due to the fact that the journeyman forward has bounced around quite a bit during his career in the NHL. Rieder has previously played for the Arizona Coyotes, the Los Angeles Kings and the Edmonton Oilers so it will be interesting to watch and see if one of those teams is willing to gamble on him once again.

The Kings in particular are off to a very poor start to the season and while Rieder may not be the answer the could pick him up if only to push some of their other forwards in the lineup.
