Flames’ Rittich smashes stick, throws it at officials after giving up OT goal!

There was a lot of controversy last night in the game between the Dallas Stars and the Calgary Flames, and we are pretty sure the controversy only got worse once the final buzzer went off…

Twenty-four seconds into overtime, Stars captain Jamie Benn knocked the puck into the slot where his linemate Tyler Seguin was wide open and he sniped a perfect shot inside the goal post on Flames goalie David Rittich.

Rittich argued he had been interfered with by Benn but after video review the referees allowed the goal.

And Rittich went nuts!

You can see the entire segment in the video above, atop of this article.

The Flames netminder smashed his stick on the crossbar and threw the broken end of his goalie stick towards the vicinity of the referees after the OT goal was confirmed on the ice.

In a way, Rittich has a point: Benn went behind him and there is no way that’s a legal move when it comes to the goalie’s territotyr. However, some people might think that he should have had the time to recover and get back into position to block Seguin’s shot and give the Flames a chance to stay in the game.

“Maybe next time, I will lay down for half an hour. I don’t know,” Rittich told reporters after the loss when asked if he should have acted to get the call in his favour.

Getting the start over veteran Mike Smith, Rittich finished with 24 saves. He falls to 8-2-1.

He also ended the game with quite the controversial move and could hear back from the NHL on his reaction and treatment of the officials.

We will keep you posted.
