Flames sign young forward for much less than we believed.

When we heard the rumor from Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman this evening, we incorrectly assumed that the contract being discussed by Michael Ferland and the Calgary Flames was for $3.5 million per season, now however we know better.

The Calgary Flames have officially announced the signing of the 25-year-old forward to a new two-year contract, and while $3.5 million is still the number, that is the total value of the contract and not the average annual value.

That means Ferland will only cost the Flames a very team-friendly $1.75 million per season over the course of the next two seasons, and for a guy who put up 15 goals last season that is a great deal.

Here are some additional details from the Flames official press release:

Ferland, a native of Brandon, Manitoba played 76 games with Calgary last season recording career highs in goals (15) and points (25). The 25 year old forward has played 173 career NHL games, all with the Flames, notching 21 goals and 27 assists for 48 points while accumulating 111 penalty minutes.
