Flames staff confirm that NHL will return this summer

Gelinas, the former NHL forward who played two decades in the league with the likes of the Edmonton Oilers, Quebec Nordiques, Vancouver Canucks, Carolina Hurricanes, Calgary Flames and Florida Panthers, confirmed to RDS Sports in his native Quebec that the the Flames and the rest of the NHL will return at some point this summer.

“We have meetings three times a week with Brad Treliving,” Gelinas said to RDS’ Luc Gelinas. “At our last meeting, he told us Be ready, it will happen."

“We started working on formats to see how it could go,” says Gélinas. “Two weeks ago, he was talking about reopening in mid-May for a training camp without coaches and with players in small groups. But that date gets pushed back every week. I think the decision will not come from the NHL or the Flames, but rather it is the government that will tell us to go back to work.”

An interesting look behind the scenes courtesy of Gelinas. More from RDS:

“Recently, we really started working on the clubs in our division,” says Gelinas. “The NHL’s plan is that the teams would come together in one city to finish the season, and in our case, it will be Edmonton or Las Vegas.”

Again, an interesting peak at the inner workings of an NHL front office as they attempt to get back on the ice. While we can’t confirm Gelinas’ claims, this is another encouraging sign that the NHL is inching closer and closer to a return. Fingers crossed, hockey fans.
