Flyers forced to offer overpriced deal to Hayes?!

Fans have been waiting to see what will come out of this Kevin Hayes trade, as the Flyers are still trying to get him to sign in Philadelphia.

The Winnipeg Jets traded Hayes to the Flyers in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 2019 NHL Draft. They basically acquired his rights, seeing that Hayes is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1 and did not discuss the possibility of a long-term contract in Philadelphia before the trigger was pulled.

The Flyers might have gotten nervous to lose out Hayes in this potentially failed trade, which leads many to believe they might be willing to overpay to keep him in Philly.

Last week, it was reported by TSN’s Frank Seravalli that Hayes has been intrigued by the Columbus Blue Jackets and Arizona Coyotes.

It could explain why TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie reports there's a sense of optimism the Flyers will reach a contract with thepending unrestricted free agent. However, McKenzie speculates the market value for Hayes may be more than $6.5 million on a six-year deal.

Hayes scored 19 goals and 35 assists over 71 games with the Rangers and Jets in 2018-19, adding two goals and one assist over six playoff games with Winnipeg. He was on a one-year, $5.175 million contract this season.

Let’s hope the Flyers are being smart about signing Hayes and aren’t blinded by the interest the free agent may be getting elsewhere.
