Forced to retire due to concussions, former tough guy to take on NHL coaching role.
Keystone Press.

A once physically dominant forward in the National Hockey League, veteran Ryane Clowe saw his career cut short when doctor's informed him that he should stop playing as a result of health concerns stemming from multiple concussions. As a result Clowe played just 13 games in the 2014-2015 season, and hasn't been back on the ice since.

However Clowe is not done with the sport of hockey, and in fact on Tuesday the New Jersey Devils released an official announcement, naming Clowe as the team's new assistant head coach.

The New Jersey Devils today named Ryane Clowe as an assistant coach. Clowe will join Assistant Coaches Geoff Ward, Alain Nasreddine and Goaltending Coach Chris Terreri on John Hynes’ staff.

“We are looking forward to Ryane joining our staff,” said Hynes. “His character, expertise as a player, knowledge of the game and passion to coach will be a benefit for our players and the Devils’ organization.”

Clowe will likely have no issue earning the respect of the players in the dressing room, and could in fact provide an interesting bridge between the players and the coaching staff. More importantly. whatever your feelings about Clowe may be, it's good to see a veteran player move on to success after such a debilitating series of injuries.
