Former Montreal Canadiens defenseman Mark Streit announced his retirement from hockey on Monday. Streit, 39, was released by the Montreal Canadiens on October 16th, after he signed a one-year deal with the team last summer.

Montreal drafted him 262nd overall in 2004, when Streit was already 27 years old. He played 786 games in the NHL with Montreal, the New York Islanders, the Philadelphia Flyers and the Pittsburgh Penguins, registering 434 points. He added 15 points in 34 playoff games. His best season was in 2006-2007, when he registered 62 points in 81 games with the Canadiens. He played only two games with Montreal before being released, without registering a point.

The Swiss defenseman won the Stanley Cup with Pittsburgh last season.
