For many years veteran National Hockey League forward Chris Drury captain was a leader on the ice for the organization and on Friday the Rangers made a move to put Drury in a position to lead off the ice as well.

In an official announcement on the team's official website the Ranger's announced that the 40 year old Drury will be taking a position as an assistant general manager under current general manager Jeff Gorton.

From The Rangers official statement:

New York Rangers General Manager Jeff Gorton announced today that the team has promoted Chris Drury to Assistant General Manager.

In his expanded role, Drury, 40, will assist Gorton on all player transactions and contract negotiations, and he will continue to assist in overseeing and evaluating all players at the collegiate level. Drury, who rejoined the Rangers organization as Director of Player Development on September 4, 2015, will continue to assist in the development of Rangers prospects, both on and off the ice, and serve as a liaison between the hockey operations department and prospects in the organization.

Gorton is highly respected around the league with several teams even attempting to poach him from the Rangers before he ascended to the role of general manager, while it's unlikely that Drury will be moving up the ladder any time soon as a result, he will have the opportunity to learn under what is by all accounts a very competent NHL general manager.
