Former NHL GM believes Red Wings are going “real big” in free agency.

There have been a ton of offseason rumors surround the Detroit Red Wings, but the latest comes from a former NHL general manager and player agent, and a current analyst for the NHL network.

Over the week-end Brian Lawton reported that he has heard the Red Wings intentions are too make a "real big" move in free agency, and have set their sights on pending free agent Steven Stamkos of the Tampa Bay Lightning. Obviously the addition of a player like the Lightning's captain would bolster their roster. However Lawton also added that he believes the team's focus should not be on making a big time signing at forward, but instead suggested the focus should be on upgrading the defensive core.

While Lawton did not specify what player's the Red Wings could target, there are veteran free agents available on the market like Vancouver's Dan Hamhuis who could prove to be a quality addition. There have also been trade rumors involving defenseman like Montreal's P.K. Subban which seem highly unlikely, as well as rumors involving St. Louis' Kevin Shattenkirk who appears likely to be dealt over the summer.
