National Hockey League fans might envy two-time Stanley Cup winner Kevin Stevens for his success on the ice. But the former NHL star is now sharing a tough part of his life, when he entered the darkness of opioid addiction.

“If you're an opiate addict and stuck in addiction bad things are going to happen,” Kevin Stevens said in an interview with Fox25Boston

Bad things did happen to Stevens, who won the Stanley Cup twice, with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He went on to face jail time in a federal court. In May 2016, federal agents busted down his door and arrested him for conspiring to sell oxycodone.

“I was at the bottom. I couldn't see no purpose in my life. There really was no purpose,” he said.

For more than twenty years, Stevens, who also played for the Boston Bruins, New York Rangers, Los Angeles Kings and Philadelphia Flyers, struggled with addiction to opiate painkillers after suffering from a devastating facial injury during a game.

Stevens is now traveling around sharing his story with hopes of stopping others from following his path. He also became a Penguins' special assignment scout earlier this month.
