Former National Hockey League defenseman Ryan O'Byrne has officially announced his retirement from professional hockey.

O'Byrne, a former Montreal Canadiens third round draft choice in 2003, had prolonged his career after departing from the NHL by playing a season in the KHL as well as a pair of seasons in Europe, but made the decision to retire today, making the announcement through his social media.

He played over 300 games in the NHL as a member of the Montreal Canadiens, Colorado Avalanche, and Toronto Maple Leafs before signing with the KHL's Prague Lev for the 2013-2014 season.

He has made the decision to go back to school and finish his University degree, and we wish him the best of luck in that as well as all of his future endeavors.
