John Tavares has had the opportunity to sign a contract extension with the New York Islanders since July 1st. However, more than two weeks later, we have no indication that he is going to sign a new deal anytime soon. The 26-year-old center is reportedly waiting to see how GM Garth Snow will manage his team over the next few months.

In an interview with NHL.comToronto Maple Leafs forward Matt Martin, who played alongside Tavares for seven years, felt like he needed to comment on his former captain's situation:

"I think it's a process that he's got to think over and do what's best for him and his family. As a friend of mine would it be great to have him? Absolutely. But I want him to do whatever will make him happy and wherever he feels where he can win and be successful is what you hope for. At the end of the day that's all that matters to me."

He also added that he believes the fact that Tavares did not sign a contract extension on July 1st does not mean he won't be back on Long Island:

"I think Johnny's a pretty loyal guy. It's a tough decision. Obviously his next contract is probably going to be where he essentially plays for the rest of his [NHL] career. It's something he's got to think over and consider. A great player in Stamkos went through the same thing last year and it went right to the wire and he decided to stay home."

Tavares recorded 28 goals and 38 assists for 66 points in 77 games with the Isles last season. 2017-18 will be the last season of his six-year, $33 million contract. It is fair to believe his next deal will be much more lucrative for him.
