Former top 5 pick in the draft placed on waivers in a shocking move.

A National Hockey League defenseman has hit a low point in his career, but if I was a betting man I would place a big bet on him getting another shot in rather short order.

On Saturday morning Sportsnet's National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman published a stunning report when he revealed that the Anaheim Ducks had placed veteran defenseman Luke Schenn on the waivers. The move comes as a major shock given both Schenn's pedigree and the fact that, at 29 years of age, he remains relatively young by the standards of NHL defensemen.

This is a huge fall from grace for Schenn who was selected 5th overall in the 2008 National Hockey League Entry draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs, picked ahead of played like Mikkel Boedker, Erik Karlsson, Jake Gardiner, Michael Del Zotto, and Jordan Eberle. Needless to say none of the players I just listed would ever be placed on waivers by their respective organizations at any point this season and it's a real indication of how poorly Schenn is viewed by the upper brass in the Anaheim Ducks organization at this stage in his career.

Schenn is coming off a 64 game performance with the Arizona Coyotes in the 2017 - 2018 NHL regular season and in those 64 games he recorded 1 goals and 6 assists for a total of 7 points, but he also finished the season with a plus minus rating of -12. This season has not started in a much better fashion for Schenn unfortunately, in his first 68 games as a defenseman for the Anaheim Ducks he has produced no goals and no assists, aka no points at all, and is already a plus minus of -6 on the season and has 7 penalty minutes to his name on top of it.

Now things look rather bleak for Schenn but given his draft pedigree, and the ceiling that many NHL scouts expected him to have upon reaching the big league, I suspect that there will be at least one NHL general manager willing to give him a shot on their roster, especially when you consider that they have to give up absolutely nothing in order to pick him up on waivers. Schenn has previously spent time as a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Philadlephia Flyers, Los Angeles Kings and the aforementioned Arizona Coyotes and perhaps one of those teams will be willing to gamble on him finding his game again.
