Less than two weeks removed from firing long time head coach Darryl Sutter, the Los Angeles Kings still haven’t committed to a bench boss for 2017-18. Initially, there was speculation that the team would promote assistant coach John Stevens, but that has yet to materialize.

Long time Kings general manager Dean Lombardi was also given his walking papers during the franchise’s purge and his assistant Rob Blake was promoted to the role of general manager. It’s unclear at this point whether Blake is hesitant to hire Stevens, or if he has another candidate in mind for the position.

Jon Rosen, Fox Sports West reporter and Kings insider, has reported that the Kings are indeed still considering Stevens, but have widened their search to include University of Denver head coach Jim Montgomery.

One thing’s for sure, whoever ends up replacing Sutter in Los Angeles will have some enormous shoes to fill. In six seasons behind the bench in Los Angeles, Sutter compiled a 225-147-45 record with Stanley Cup championships in both 2012 and 2014.
