GAMEDAY REPORT: Caps looking to shake things up?

As the Washington Capitals prepare for a pivotal game 4 against the Pittsburgh Penguins tonight at PPG Paints Arena, head coach Barry Trotz will be putting the finishing touches on his team’s lineup.

The Capitals skated with seven defensemen and 11 forwards in game 3, but could make a change to their back end to get another forward into the mix. Reports out of Pittsburgh from NHL.com reporter Katie Brown indicates, however, that Trotz will not make any changes, electing to stay the course with seven blue liners.

If that’s the case, it means that both Karl Alzner and Nate Schmidt will remain in the lineup and split time with Brooks Orpik on the team’s third defensive pairing. Of course, a suspension to Matt Niskanen would have changed things for the Caps, but fortunately for the team he was spared from supplemental discipline.

Regardless of who’s on the ice tonight, fans are assured a testy affair given the stakes and the development of the series so far. Should be a good one!
