Gary Bettman drops a bombshell about an NHL team's future!

NHL commissionner Gary Bettman made a shocking revelation to the Sun when he brought to light a conversation he had back in March with Calgary mayor Naheed Nenshi and his chief of staff. 

Bettman sat down with the men to discuss the future of the Calgary Flames in the Canadian city and got a surprising and disappointing reply. 

“At one point I said: Let me ask you a question. I wasn’t being threatening. I wanted to understand. What happens if the end result of this is the Flames have to move?”

“And you know what the mayor said to me? So they’ll move.”

Bettman added that after the conversation, he realized that a potential arena-deal agreement between the team and the city was almost impossible and told himself: 

"From any rational standpoint, despite all the puffery” the city wasn’t really pursuing a new arena. For Bettman, there was “no point continuing this charade.”

“It was clear this was going nowhere.”

Nenshi responded upon hearing of Bettman recounting the mid-March meeting. He remembres that it was “somewhat different.”

“I remember very well saying to him: That would be an awful outcome but it’s not going to destroy my city."

Flames fans are still hoping that the NHL and the City will come to an agreement, but Bettman offered a spolier on the whole deal: 

“Some Hollywood scripts end with love stories and some end with tragedies.”
