This is one shrewd general manager.

While we knew without question that the trade involving the Florida Panthers and the Airzona Coyotes today was a salary dump, comments from general manager John Chayka serve to highlight just how true that is.

On the surface it was widely viewed as a big win for the Coyotes, if only because they got an elite prospect in Lawson Crouse, and many feel that Crouse, a former Panthers' first round draft choice, was by far the most valuable piece in this trade. In fact so valuable that many wondered if the $5.5 million in cap space the Panthers cleared was worth making the move.

According to a report from Stephen Whyno of the Associated Press it was the youngest GM in the National Hockey League who pushed to get the deal done and we may now know why the Panthers gave up so much.

Again according to Whyno, Chayka himself informed him that the other piece in the trade Dave Bolland won't be in any condition to play for the "foreseeable future", and will likely as a result be placed on long-term injured reserve. It appears that the Coyotes may have taken on their second contract of the summer that belongs to a player who may not play for them, and this time they got a big return.
