Goalie Scott Darling set to sign professional tryout deal in stunning move!

We all knew the pool of available goalies on the free-agent market was quite abundant this offseason and a lot of those netminders ending signing new deals as soon as the market opened. However, it feels like the amount of choice was not enough for the Florida Panthers - or they weren’t attractive enough for the available UFAs out there - seeing that on Tuesday night, it was reported by the Fourth Period that the Panthers were set to sign goalie Scott Darling on a professional tryout agreement.

Darling spent last season in Austria playing with HC Innsbruck in the EBEL and was hoping to get another shot with a team in the National Hockey League. While his dream comes true, it is not getting done the way he might have hoped or how we saw things unfolding.

Back in 2015, Darling was in action during five playoff games with the Chicago Blackhawks, helping the team win the Stanley Cup, after playing in 14 games during the 2014-15 regular season.

With everything happening in Chicago and goalie Corey Crawford leaving for New Jersey during free agency, some fans though Darling would return to help their depth in net.

“I think I’m going to take another run at it this year,” Darling had recently told NBC Sports. “… I think it’s not out of grasp for me, so we’ll see what happens. The whole thing with me is I’m very proud of my 10 years pro and I’m not going to cry myself to sleep at night if I never play another NHL game, but I think I’m going to take another run at it.”

And he now gets another shot, in Florida. On a PTO. This is by the way the first professional tryout deal of this offseason.

More to come?
