Golden Knights break 91 year-old expansion record

Not since the 1926-27 New York Rangers has the NHL seen an expansion franchise quite like the Vegas Golden Knights. With the team’s 3-1 victory over the Boston Bruins on Sunday night the NHL’s 31st team improved their record to 4-1 in their first five games as a franchise, becoming just the third team in NHL history to do so. The other two, were the Rangers as mentioned above and the 1917-18 Montreal Canadiens.

While the team may not have had the toughest schedule in their first five games, Sunday’s matchup against Boston represented the team’s first matchup against a 2016-17 playoff team. With rookie Malcolm Subban in net facing his former team, not many fans or analysts gave the Knights much of a chance. But, just as they’ve done since the puck first dropped on October 5th, the Golden Knights defied the odds. They carried the play for much of the game and ended up just 30 seconds away from a shutout victory.

Matchups this week against both the St. Louis Blues and Chicago Blackhawks will really put the team to the test, however.
