Forward Andreas Athanasiou has yet to accept the offer he has received from Russia, which is good news for the Detroit Red Wings.

Athanasiou has had an offer from Ak Bars for around 10 days, but has yet to sign, although the season is well underway in the Kontinental Hockey League

“This is a very important decision for Andreas and he (is) taking the necessary time to consider this options,” Darren Ferris, Athanasiou's agent, said in a text to the Detroit Free Press on Saturday. “There is plenty of time before the season starts.”

The 23-year-old was said to be using the KHL offers as leverage in negoatiations with the Wings, but GM Ken Holland has not bitten yet. Athanasiou is a restricted free agent without arbitration rights, who reportedly received a significant offer from Ak Bars, of one year and in the range of $2.5-$3 million.

The Wings have offered Athanasiou two years at $1.9 million per season. And the fact that his name is not at the bottom of a contract in Russia gives Detroit hopes.
