Gotta See It: Ducks legend FINALLY back with the team
Keystone Press

Did you see it? No need to adjust your television set, that was indeed Paul Kariya in an Anaheim Ducks uniform prior to game 1 against the Nashville Predators. After years of a strained relationship between the team and its former captain, it appears that Kariya and the Ducks have finally reconciled.

In a unique postseason celebration, the Ducks have called upon former players to cross out numbers on the walls of the Honda Center with each victory. Giant numbers 1-16 adorn the pillars are the arena and represent the 16 wins required to win the Stanley Cup. With each victory comes the ceremonial crossing out in orange paint from a former Ducks great. For win number 9? Number 9 himself, Paul Kariya.

Since retiring from the NHL in 2010 due to post-concussion symptoms, Kariya has been ominously quiet about the game and his place in it. There’s no doubt that he was one of the most dynamic players of his generation and in inarguably one of the best Anaheim (Mighty) Ducks of all time. When he was absent from former teammate Teemu Selanne’s jersey retirement at the Honda Center, it only led to further speculation that the former star and the team were at odds. With this newest development however, it appears as though time has healed those wounds. Hopefully, this is just the start of a new era between Kariya and the Ducks franchise. Regardless, how cool was it to see him with that Ducks logo on his chest…If only just for a moment?
