Evgeni Malkin has lost some games to injury this season, most recently sidelined with a shoulder injury that has seen him miss the last nine matches. Still, there’s no doubt that when Malkin is in the lineup, he’s one of the most important pieces the Penguins have.

A pigeon, in hockey slang, is a derogatory term describing a player who lacks the skill set to score on their own and makes up for it by getting points off the plays of their more skilled line mates. “Shoveling garbage”, if you will.

Obviously, Kessel is just chirping Malkin, who is finally set to return to the lineup in tonight’s game against the Devils in New Jersey.

It’s good to see these players in high spirits, because Pittsburgh is about to embark on a journey to try and capture two consecutive Stanley Cups. It’s good to laugh about injuries now, with the Penguins expecting almost all of their sidelined players back in the lineup as the post-season starts. It won’t be a laughing matter in a few weeks.

You’d think Malkin would have done enough for the Penguins to earn himself a regular stall in the dressing room, but hey, it’s not about where you sit in the dressing room, it’s about what you do on the ice
