The Flyers gave Sam Morin and Mike Vecchione the rookie treatment

It’s somewhat of a lighthearted tradition in the NHL that rookies take the ice by themselves for the pregame skate. Teams will usually let the newcomer take a lap or two on their in front of the crowd before joining them as a group. Last night in New Jersey before their game against the Devils the Philadelphia Flyers gave Sam Morin and Mike Vecchione the dual rookie treatment.

The tradition is meant to be one part-subtle embarrassment and one-part moment of glory for the youngsters. In the case of Morin and Vecchione, they actually appeared to enjoy the pregame goof. Both rookies shed their helmets, took a light twirl and sported big smiles the entire time.

When asked about his first NHL game, Morin, who was visibly out of breath said, “It’s a lot faster in the NHL, that’s for sure…it’s so different but I love it. It’s fun.” When asked the same question Vecchione responded, “It’s awesome. Obviously a little faster and guys are a little bigger out there…but it’s going good so far.”

With the Flyers now officially eliminated from postseason contention it looks as though head coach Dave Hakstol will play some of the team’s youngsters down the stretch in an effort to determine whether they’re ready to contribute with the big club next season.
