The NHL might be on pause, but that surely hasn’t stopped Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin from thinking about ways to make sure he can still beat Wayne Gretzky’s goal record before he retires.

We bet we will find out more about this later this week as the NHL has promised to put together a virtual interview in a #HockeyAtHome Interview Series produced by NBC between Ovechkin and Gretzky, who will need to face many comparisons.

Darren Dreger explained on Insider Trading on TSN how the interview will be held.

“The expectation is that at some point this week, the NHL will unveil a virtual sit-down interview involving Alex Ovechkin and Wayne Gretzky, sharing stories on their careers. Undoubtedly, they will talk Ovechkin’s chase and eyeballing some of the records that Wayne Gretzky currently holds. And it’s expected they’ll have a celebrity host as well.”

Ovechkin is currently trying to catch Gretzky’s all-time goals record of 894. Gretzky believes Ovechkin has a “legitimate chance” to catch him while Ovechkin doesn’t “believe it’s possible.”

Ovechkin scored his 700th career goal against the New Jersey Devils on February 22 . Gretzky congratulated the Caps captain in a pregame ceremony after Ovi became only the eighth player in NHL history to hit the milestone .

“Congratulations on joining the 700 Club,” Gretzky said. “You’ve had an outstanding career. You’ve scored 700 goals. You’ve won the Stanley Cup. And you’ve meant a lot to the game hockey – not only in Washington but throughout North America and Russia. I’ll be there saying the same thing when you get to 800. Good luck.”

It is well-known that both Ovi and Gretzky are friend off the ice, but we wonder how the interview will go down between the two legends.
