The Boston Bruins may have some competition up the middle in training camp this season.

Trent Frederic is a former Boston Bruins first round draft pick, he was selected 29th overall at the 2016 National Hockey League Entry Draft, but in spite of his draft pedigree he has had relatively little time at the National Hockey League level. This year however Frederic clearly intends to change that, and in fact he stated as much when he recently spoke to members of the media regarding his future in Boston.

“My goal is to make the team out of camp obviously,” said Frederic as per Boston Hockey Now's Jimmy Muprhy. “I feel great. I think I’ve had a great summer of training. I think I have the ability to play and do well in the NHL. Just excited to play hockey now.”

Frederic is coming off of his first taste of NHL action during the 2018 - 2019 NHL regular season, a season in which he played in 15 games as a member of the NHL Bruins. He recorded no points and no assists during that stretch but he did show off his gritty side by collecting 15 penalty minutes during his tenure in the Bruins lineup. It does not sound like Frederic will be relying on his previous success to secure a spot for him in the lineup however, no instead it appears as though the young forward has been hard at work all summer long trying to get his body ready for the upcoming season,

“This summer my was goal was to slim down a little bit,” Frederic added. “Not necessary looe weight, but get in better shape conditioning-wise. I think I did that. I am excited to start skating again and getting in games.”

The young center was one of Boston's Black Aces during their most recent run to the Stanley Cup Final as well, and Frederic believes that has also helped him take the next step. Frederic compared the experienced college hockey provided him prior to making the jump the NHL to the experience he received this spring during the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

“College hockey helped me a lot from making the jump from college to the AHL so that was a nice transition. Still a lot tougher. I learned a lot that year,” Frederic said. “Then playing in the American League first half of the year I went through a lot some ups and downs. I got lucky enough to get up at the end of January. It was a dream come true. Everything came at me fast and I had a great time. I think I learned a lot so that helps this year.”

It will be a tough hill to climb for the young man, but he certainly is not lacking in confidence.
