The Montreal Canadiens have traded defenceman Mike Reilly to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for a 2021 fifth-round pick and forward Andrew Sturtz.

This is the first official trade of 2020.

It was well known that the Senators were looking for help on the back end. The Canadiens were also being watched as many forwards have headed to the infirmary in Montreal, with the latest news revealing that Brendan Gallagher was out with a concussion.

In 14 games with the Habs this season, Reilly recorded four assists. He has been a healthy scratch 24 times and was in the press box since December 21st.

Reilly was acquired from the Minnesota Wild on Feb. 26, 2018 in exchange for a fifth-round pick and has one year left on his contract at $1.5 million. There was no salary retained in the trade.

The veteran blue liner is likely to be happy with the move to get more playing time.

In the trade, the Canadiens are getting Sturtz, who a 25-year-old right winger. He plays for the Belleville Senators in the American Hockey League (AHL). In 14 games this season, he collected a goal and an assist. He was never sent to the penalty box.
