This certainly seems like a little deja vu.

According to an official announcement from the Montreal Canadiens, veteran forward Andrew Shaw has been traded to the Chicago Blackhawks for a number of draft picks.

Update: Shaw and the Habs 7th round pick at the 2021 National Hockey League Entry Draft will be going to Chicago while coming back the other way from the Blackhawks will be a 2nd round draft choice and a 7th round draft choice at the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. Shaw is of course the center piece of the deal, as he was back in 2016 when he was the subject of a trade between these two organizations, that time with Chicago trading Shaw to Montreal who eventually signed him to a long term contract.

It is somewhat of a strange move from the Montreal Canadiens who saw Shaw have arguably the best season of his career last year alongside some of their young developing stars. Shaw appeared in just 63 games for the Habs last year but in spite of that he recorded 19 goals and 28 assists for a total of 47 points on the season. Additionally it seems like the Canadiens already had plenty of salary cap space for any potential moves they were looking to make in free agency, so although this move obviously clears up a significant chunk of space for general manager Marc Bergevin, it remains to be seen what the Canadiens will do with it moving forward.

Stay tuned for updates.
