It seems like Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin took it personally when rumours surfaced that forward Jonathan Drouin could be traded in the coming days…

Bergevin was quite vocal about the latest trade speculation, insisting there is no credence to the chatter. He even took a shot at Toronto - we all love a good Montreal vs. Toronto battle - with his hilarious explanation.

“I don’t know where they come from,” Bergevin told the media on Thursday, as relayed by TSN . “Most of those reports are from somebody’s basement in Toronto, so I don’t pay attention to that, to be honest with you.”

Earlier on Thursday, an Eastern Conference executive reportedly texted Sportsnet’s Eric Engels on Wednesday to say Drouin’s name was “definitely out there.” Bergevin’s reply to the rumour came in shortly after.

It however wouldn’t be surprising if the Canadiens were attempting to move Drouin, who’s been almost invisible in the preseason. He has collected just one assist and has seen limited ice time.

“He had some good moments, but overall, we need more,” Bergevin added. “He’s a skill player. He has talent, he has a lot of attributes and I know last year he had a tough finish. He had a good summer. Training camp is training camp.”

In 81 games last season in Montreal, Drouin tallied 53 points, but he recorded just four goals and 16 points over his final 30 contests. Some believe he could be the odd man out for the Habs’ season opener.
