Has Simmonds convinced the Flyers to keep him?

Ever since the start of the season, when Ron Hextall was still the general manager of the Philadelphia Flyers, it seemed like forward Wayne Simmonds was always part of trade chatter.

As the Feb. 25 trade deadline approaches, the chatter hasn’t stopped and the forward has been linked to several teams, including the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins. However, it seems like Simmonds and the rest of his teammates are doing everything they can to prove to new GM Chuck Fletcher that he should stay put in Philly.

The Flyers continued to fight in a tight race for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference and it seems like they want to prove to Fletcher they can still clinch a spot in the postseason with Simmonds. The Flyers are currently eight points out of the last Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference, where their long-time rivals, the Pittsburgh Penguins, currently sit with 67 points.

However, the clock is ticking, which means Philadelphia could wait until the last minute at the deadline to move Simmonds, as Pierre LeBrun explained on TSN’s Insider Trading on Thursday.

“There’s a chance he stays put. I think it’s a very specific circumstance, which is that the Flyers 10 days from now or two or three points out of a playoff spot and the offers that Chuck Fletcher, the GM of the Flyers, has in front of him are not at the level that he believes are worth trading a popular player and teammate like  Wayne Simmonds. I think it’s more likely than not still that Wayne Simmonds is dealt to a contender but keep that in mind, that signing him, keeping him as an own rental are also secondary options behind obviously moving him.”

We better keep an eye on what the Flyers will manage to do in the next 10 days…
