The Chicago Blackhawks do not want to risk it. That’s why on Friday, minutes before puck drop against the Nashville Predators, they pulled defenseman Erik Gustafsson from the lineup.

The 27-year-old picked up 60 points last season to finish sixth in the NHL in scoring by a defenseman. However, he hasn’t been anywhere near as productive this year…

The Vegas Golden Knights, who recently acquired Alec Martinez from the Los Angeles Kings, are said to be in the mix for Gustafsson’s services.

At this point, the Hawks are believed to be protecting their asset ahead of Monday’s deadline in case they can make it work with a trade partner.

Gustafsson leads all Chicago blue liners in points though he only has 26 points in 58 games.

He is an unrestricted free agent this summer and is likely to be moved over the weekend.
