Hawks sign veteran defenseman to contract

The Chicago Blackhawks made an important roster move on Thursday, signing defenseman Brandon Davidson to a one-year deal that will run through the 2018-19 season. The contract value, as revealed by The Athletic's Scott Powers and confirmed by the team is of $650,000.

Last season was a weird one for the veteran defender, who will now play for a fourth team in less than a year. He was waived in December by one of the worst teams in the NHL, the Montreal Canadiens, but was claimed off by the Edmonton Oilers. However, they ended up moving him for a third-round pick in February, and he landed with the New York Islanders.

“It was a whirlwind of events that happened,” Davidson said to the Chicago Tribune. “I had a bad start in Montreal and I couldn’t find my rhythm. I just lost some confidence. I don’t really know how, I was just trying to maybe do too much and couldn’t find my game at all. The more I did, the less things kind of worked out for me. Edmonton was a familiar place for me. I knew the coaches, I knew the players. Ideally, it was an easy transition going back and playing for them.”

" In all, it was a very successful season. I was able to grow as a player and learn the ups and downs and learn how to ride that curve.”

This is surely an encouraging sign for the blue liner, who landed a professional tryout agreement with the Blackhawks in late August and managed to carve a spot in the roster, which is confirmed today with this new contract.

“He has some physicality,” head coach Joel Quenneville said of Davidson to the Chicago Tribune. “His puck movement was crisp. He’s a pro that has been around as well. Gives us some size back there. We were real happy with his game (Tuesday) night.”

Davidson is expected to bring leadership and experience to the Hawks' dressing room, especially in his mentoring role with younger blue liners. He adds some depth to the roster, which is already in need with Connor Murphy and Gustav Forsling out until at least November.
