Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin has been insistent regarding his desire to participate in the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in South Korea, however his chances of attending those games took another hit on Wednesday.

The head of the Russian Hockey Federation, Vladislav Tretiak, has now gone on the record and stated flatly that Ovechkin needs to forget about playing in the Olympics, a statement that is not likely to sit well with the Russian superstar.

“What is there for Ovechkin to do now? Nothing. Play for Washington,” Tretiak told R-Sport, as translated by The Washington Post. “He has to accept that.”

Ovechkin has been steadfast despite the seemingly impossible odds that he will participate, however this latest statement from Tretiak leaves little doubt that he will indeed be forced to miss the Olympic games.

Ovechkin has yet to respond, but it will be extremely interesting to see what he has to say when he does.
