I think it is safe to say that after this we can put the talk of a Henrik Lundqvist retirement to bed, at least for now.

There has been a ton of speculation regarding what the future will hold for Henrik Lundqvist following a decision this week by the New York Rangers to buyout the veteran netminder after 16 seasons with the team. Although it was a decision that many had expected given the way the 2019 - 2020 National Hockey League regular season had played out, with both Alexandar Georgiev and Igor Shesterkin passing him on the Rangers depth chart, it was still a huge shock to many long time Ranger fans who had expected Lundqvist to at least play out his current contract. It was no doubt a shock for Lundqvist as well given that he would be forced to play for another team for the first time in his NHL career, this assuming that he wanted to continue playing.

I think we can now say that, assuming there will be offers coming his way, we can expect to see Henrik Lundqvist in another team's jersey come next season. On Sunday night the long time Rangers goalie took to social media and published a very short message, but one that left very little doubt about the direction that King Henrik intends to go in.

From Lundqvist:

"I still love to compete. I still love the game and I still want to WIN!," wrote the now former Ranger.

Although you may think it will be a long shot for Lundqvist to find himself a role on another NHL team, I strongly suspect that there will be plenty of interest in having an experienced and respected figure like Lundqvist in many an NHL locker room. It is likely fair to suggest that his days as a full time starter are over, but who wouldn't want to see Lundqvist take a discount deal to play backup for a Stanley Cup contender and get his chance at the Stanley Cup ring that has eluded him thus far?

It's not as crazy as you think given that Lundqvist has already been linked to one perennial cup contender.
