The New Jersey Devils are hoping for a bright future as they have locked up talented forward Nico Hischier on Friday afternoon.

According to Sportsnet, general manager Ray Shero has signed Hischier to to a seven-year, $50.75-million. NHL insider Pierre LeBrun mentioned earlier today that a deal was nearing between both parties.

Hischier, playing histhird NHL season, is in the final year of his entry-level deal after being selected No. 1 overall in 2017. He carries a cap hit of $925,000 this season. He was scheduled to become a restricted free agent in July.

Through 157 career games, the first-overall pick in the 2017 NHL Draft has 37 goals and 101 points. In six games this season, he has two assists.

The contract will make Hischier the second-highest paid Devil behind defenseman P.K. Subban. The Devils are also working hard at trying to re-sign teammate Taylor Hall, who is set to hit free agency this summer.

The Devils have struggled since the start of the 2019-20 season, earning just their first victory last night over the New York Rangers. This is however a high point in the calendar.
