The NHL's Hockey Diversity Alliance (HDA) is taking equal amounts of credit and blame today for helping to nudge players from the 8 remaining Stanley Cup Playoff teams into a two-day protest today and tomorrow. The HDA, led by NHL stars like Evander Kane, Matt Dumba and Nazem Kadri reportedly held a call with over 100 NHL players earlier today to discuss whether or not to boycott today's and tomorrow's games and evidently the players listened as the NHL and the NHLPA jointly announced a two day protest to "take a step back".

The protest is of course in reaction to the NBA's decision to postpone/cancel games yesterday after the Milwaukee Bucks refused to take the court in a show of protest against the issues of police brutality and racial inequality in the wake of Jacob Blake's shooting in Kenosha, WI. Several other NBA teams followed suit, to the point where the entire league elected to postpone games. Yesterday the NHL held a "moment of reflection" prior to Game 3 of the Boston Bruins and Tampa Bay Lightning's series, but to be frank it rang hollow and empty. Today's announcement though is a historic moment for the sport.

Kudos to the HDA for their involvement in this. Again, depending on your thoughts on the whole matter they either deserve credit or blame for the situation that we find ourself in. So, now that I've given the HDA their proper kudos, allow me to rip them apart for an absolutely ridiculous idea.

According to TSN's Rick Westhead, the HDA has proposed that the NHL repaint its blue lines black to show solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement.

Um... did no one tell these guys that the puck is black? Imagine trying to make an offside call with a black puck on black ice...

You know what? I think this is a fantastic idea... if you're looking for a way to get more Coach's Challenge calls for offside reviews. Maybe this is just one of those "outside the box" ideas that flies a bit over my head or maybe I'm just an old school traditionalist, but the idea of black blue lines seems absolutely ridiculous to me.
