Hollywood was hit with some sad news on Thursday when it was announced that actor and comedian Jay Thomas had lost his battle with cancer, but for many fans of hockey it also marks the passing of a classic hockey character.

As many of you will know Thomas was on of the very few representations of hockey on American television back in the 80's and 90's when he played the role of French-Canadian goaltender Eddie LeBec of the hit show Cheers.

Not only was his role as a Boston Bruins goalie on the show hilarious but it resonated with millions of hockey fans around the world who didn't have many opportunities to see their beloved sport represented on television.

As Yahoo's Sports writer Greg Wyshynski pointed out today, perhaps his most hilarious moment came when his character was killed off the show in true hockey fashion, by being run over by a Zamboni.

Needless to say anyone who has every lost someone to cancer can relate and our thoughts at this time are with Thomas' family and friends.
