Tempers flared in last night’s game between the Edmonton Oilers and the San Jose Sharks, however, it is quite easy to understand why.

During the second period, as the Sharks led 4-1 over the Oilers, forward Tomas Hertl delivered a controversial neutral zone hit on captain Connor McDavid.

As you might have guessed that did not please the Oilers, so much that a full on brawl ensued. Players all over the ice started reacting to the hit, despite the fact that McDavid clearly got lucky and did not suffer any injury - however two rivals went more than just a scuffle.

Brandon Manning stood up for his captain and fought Barclay Goodrow once the scrum got separated by the officials. Check out the hit and the fight in the video below:

For what it’s worth, Hertl received a minor penalty for interference for his hit on McDavid, who finished the game.

You have to admit it’s great to see the Oilers standing up for their captain, who does most of the work night in, night out.

What are your thoughts on Hertl’s hit?
