We love the good news coming in about the Humboldt Broncos!

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League team is heading to the playoffs despite having to put together a whole new roster following the devastating bus crash that took the lives of sixteen people last April.

Sixteen people – including 10 players – were killed and 13 players were injured. Two surviving players did return for the season, however the rest of the team was essentially built from scratch after a training camp that took place in May.

Brayden Camrud and Derek Patter, the two survivors of the bus crash who are back on the team, were instrumental in their team's success. Camrud overcame a severe concussion, loss of feeling in one of his arms and neck issues, but managed to put up 27 goals and 28 assists during the regular season. Patter, who still struggles with a leg injury, had 10 goals and 11 assists.

After the final game on Tuesday night, the Broncos finished sixth out of 12 teams with 35 wins in 58 games and 74 points. The Broncos will play the Estevan Bruins in the first playoff round starting on March 15.

The Broncos lost their coach, Darcy Haugan, in the crash. His replacement, Nathan Oystrick, parted ways with the team in late December. Scott Barney took over as interim coach and the players adjusted well, once again.

“The guys came together pretty quickly out of training camp,” said Barney to the Globe and Mail. “It seems like they are all playing for each other.”
“I’ve got to keep the guys focused on the task at hand and obviously make things fun, too.”

Earlier this week, the Broncos received another great news that defenseman Morgan Gobeil, was finally released from the hospital this week after 333 days of intense physical, occupational and speech therapy.

We are just the Broncos will be motivated to do well for him, for their lost friends, and for their former coach Haugan who was also a victim. You can be sure that Canada will be cheering for you boys!
