Poor kid.

Life can be so cruel at times.

I think everyone in the hockey world can agree that those involved in the tragedy that struck the Humboldt Broncos hockey team have suffered more than enough for an entire lifetime, but unfortunately it seems like fate insists on playing cruel tricks on at least one of those survivors.  This week Michelle Straschnitzki. the mother of Humboldt Broncos crash survivor Ryan Straschnitzki published a message on social media in which she revealed that Ryan had been involved in yet another bus accident just a few short months after being involved in the worst accident of it's kind in Canadian history.

Ryan was paralyzed by the accident that claimed the lives of 16 of his fellow Broncos and left 13 others injured and as a result of the injuries that he suffered in that accident he now attends physiotherapy sessions in Calgary several times a week. Ryan apparently travels to those sessions by bus and on his way back from one of those sessions this week the bus transporting him back home was rear ended by a truck. Now the good news is that Ryan is ok and it does not appear that he suffered any serious injuries, at least not physically, as a result of this accident but the fact that he suffered psychological damage will come as no surprise to anyone familiar with what he has experience.

To hear Ryan's mother describe it through her message on social media is  truly heartbreaking.

To Ryan, and, ultimately Tom and I (on the other side of his SOS call), it was devastating. The kind of rip-your-heart-out-of-your-chest-while-you’re-still-breathing kind.

That being said although there was clearly sadness in Michelle's words there was also a very understandable degree of anger in them as well. She sent a very clear message to everyone who operates a motor vehicle that they should be more careful and considerate of those around them as well as their environment and did so with the fury only a mamma bear can produce.

That said, I don’t ever want to hear another call from any of our kids, like that one. Please, people, pay attention. Drive to the conditions. Follow the signals, signs, and notices. There is no prize for getting there first. Stay the f*** off your phone. Whatever it takes. Never make another family go through this absolute HELL. Please.

My thoughts go out to the Straschnitzki family in this difficult time, and I'm sure you will all be doing the same.
