Hurricanes GM Waddell comments on acquiring Nylander from Leafs
Zuma Press

No matter where you go these days, it’s impossible to avoid the never-ending rumors regarding William Nylander and his future with the Toronto Maple Leafs. We’re now just two weeks from the the NHL’s deadline for restricted free agents to sign for the 2018-19 season, meaning that time is running out for the Leafs and Nylander to come to terms on a new deal. The 22 year old Nylander has been without a contract since his three year, entry level deal expired this past offseason and, despite some serious negotiations with Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas, the two sides appear nowhere close to a deal.

The speculation now is that Dubas is fielding the market for trade offers and further speculation seems to be that the Carolina Hurricanes could be a good match. It’s no secret that the Leafs’ defence corps could use an upgrade and the Hurricanes have a bevy of young blue liners they could offer up in a trade for Nylander.

It just so happens that Hurricanes general manager Don Waddell was on Toronto radio this morning and discussed the possibility of a Nylander trade with TSN personality Michael Landsberg. First up, Waddell denied speaking to Nylander’s agent Lewis Gross about terms of a new contract, however he did say that he’s interested in the young Leafs forward but chose his words wisely.

I have not spoken to Nylander's agent Lewis Gross about a contract.
I don't want to create any conflict between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Nylander to get signed, unless of course something was moving forward toward acquiring the player.
Kyle...has made it very clear to anyone he's talked to that his priority is to get the player signed.
If you look at our league, nothing ever gets done until the deadline... I think deadlines are good and I think in this situation... both sides have to make some tough decisions. I'm sure that one way or another it'll get settled before December 1st.
