Earlier today a report from NHL insider Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic and TSN, confirmed that Carolina Hurricanes top prospect Adam Fox has informed the team that he will likely not sign a contract and instead will opt to head to unrestricted free-agency in the 2020 offseason.

The 21 year old defenseman was acquired by the Hurricanes from the Calgary Flames last offseason as part of the blockbuster deal that saw the Hurricanes also acquire Dougie Hamilton and Micheal Ferland in exchange for Elias Lindholm and Noah Hanifin.

In 33 games with Harvard this season, Fox has an impressive nine goals and 48 points.

Now, Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon has waded into the matter and has confirmed that indeed Fox will be traded. Hurricanes insider Chip Alexander managed to get score this juicy quote from the always quotable Dundon, on the matter.

“We’ll try to trade him,” Dundon said. “I think we’ll do OK. We’ll see.”

Well then… where does he end up?

LeBrun mentions the New York Rangers are a possible destination for Fox, either in free-agency in the 2020 offseason or via trade. It makes sense given that the Rangers are aggressively working to make their roster younger and younger. But… what’s the asking price? Is Fox worth giving up an asset for now? Or should the Rangers (or any other team for that matter) wait a year to sign him as an unrestricted free agent?

If Fox is indeed traded, it’ll be interesting to see what sort of return he fetches. Whomever makes a deal to trade for him is taking a large risk, to say the least.
