ICYMI: $5 million dollar player placed on waivers today.

A high-priced player was sent to the waiver wire on Monday, and while it's rare to see National Hockey League players with large contracts submitted to the waiver process, his play this season has certainly warranted it.

The Buffalo Sabres made two very significant roster moves on Monday and both moves were likely connected. First they acquired forward Scott Wilson from the Detroit Red Wings in a trade and then they waived long time Buffalo Sabres veteran forward Matt Moulson.

Moulson is currently making $5 million per season with the Sabres but he has not lived up to the expectations that go with that kind of salary this season. Through 14 games with the Sabres this season Moulson has no points and is -9 on the season. This clearly could have been general manager Jason Botterill sending a message to the veterans in his locker room.

It's unclear what the next move for Moulson will be, his $5 million price tag makes it seem unlikely, although not impossible,  that he will be claimed by a rival NHL organization.Should he clear waivers he would be sent down to the American Hockey League and that's where the uncertainty begins.

You have to believe that this move will create a serious rift between Moulson and the Sabres and, with one more year left on his deal after this season, that could be a big problem moving forward if he remains with the team.
