Earlier today Philadelphia Flyers president Paul Holmgren announced that the team has relieved general manager Ron Hextall of his duties. In other words, the team fired their longtime franchise icon and sent him packing.

Read below for the official statement from Holmgren:

"The Flyers organization has decided to relieve Ron Hextall of his duties as Executive Vice President and General Manager. We thank Ron for his many significant contributions, but it has become clear that we no longer share the same philosophical approach concerning the direction of the team. In light of these differences, we feel it's in the organization's best interests to make a change, effective immediately. I have already begun a process to identify and select our next General Manager, which we hope to complete as soon as possible."

Hextall had been GM of the team since taking over for Holmgren in 2014 and managed the team to two playoff appearances in his four years as GM. Both times the team was bounced in the first round.

Hextall revamped the Flyers’ scouting approach during his tenure as GM and is responsible for drafting and developing players like Ivan Provorov, Travis Konecny, Travis Sanheim, Oskar Lindblom, Carter Hart and Nolan Patrick.
