ICYMI: Preds’ Bonino makes controversial comments about his decision to leave Pittsburgh.

When Nick Bonino signed with the enemy, the Nashville Predators, on July 1st, Pittsburgh Penguins fans were not happy. Bonino took the time to thank fans for his time in the city and was genuinely appreciative of the two years and two Stanley Cups, he experienced in Pittsburgh and that seemed to calm fans’ nerves. Now however, with his latest admission that the Predators were always his first choice, fans are turning on him once again.

Loyalty in the NHL is dead. Players change teams on an almost annual basis in the league these days, but still it’s surprising to hear Bonino admit that he’d turned his back on the Penguins so quickly and so easily.

Maybe it was a case of knowing that he wouldn’t be welcomed back in Pittsburgh? Or that Penguins GM Rutherford had indicated he wouldn’t be returning regardless of his salary demands? We’ll never know for sure, but to call Nashville his “No. 1 the whole way” is still shocking to most Penguins fans.
