They Open Up on Like Never Before

The Ottawa Senators goaltender learned in late October that his wife, Nicholle Anderson, had been diagnosed with cancer. Since then he’s done a tremendous job of juggling his commitments to both his family and his teammates, all while facing tremendous emotional pressure. He has been in and out of the Sens lineup all year so that he could be by his wife’s side while she suffered through cancer treatment.

Asked by Bruce Garrioch (Ottawa Sun) on how he looks back on this season: Here’s what he had to say:

I feel like there’s unfinished business, but I’d rather have it be unfinished business on the selfish side,” he said. “On my family’s side, I’m glad we’re finished with the cancer battle. If we had two goals—the goal of winning the Stanley Cup and the goal of beating cancer—we achieved one but not the other.”

There will always be a chance to get to the Stanley Cup as long as I keep playing, but, if she didn’t beat cancer, there would no longer be…

And believe it or not, here’s what Nicholle told him after she received the diagnosis:

When I was watching, I see Hammond hurt, and I said, ‘Craig your team needs you,’ and he looked at me probably with like 600 eyes. I said, ‘You need to go back right this second. You can’t leave them without a goalie. They’re counting on you.’ I told him, ’to play as long as you can until we have game plan.”
