Injury Update: Boucher gives update on Sens trio
Keystone Press

With the Ottawa Senators being badly outplayed in game 5 of the Eastern Conference Final against the Pittsburgh Penguins, head coach Guy Boucher decided to rest three of his top players for the entirety of the third period so that they could get a rest. It was a bizarre move, but it appears to have paid off as all three players, Erik Karlsson, Cody Ceci and Derick Brassard should be good to go for game 6 tomorrow night, according to Boucher.

The loss of Karlsson, in particular, would have been devastating for a team whose season lies in the balance of its next game. The captain has been inarguably the team’s best player this postseason and is even generating early buzz for the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoffs’ most valuable player. Of course, for Karlsson to receive serious consideration, he’ll first need to guide his team past the Penguins and on to the Stanley Cup Final. Pretty big “if”, right there.

Despite being down 3-2 to the defending Cup champs, don’t count the Sens out just yet. If there’s one thing they’ve been good at this playoffs, it’s defying conventional wisdom and bucking the odds. Not many analysts had the Sens making the playoffs this season, let alone competing for a Stanley Cup championship.
